Chapter Eight

T-Rex made it back inside with moments to spare before Loki came charging toward him. Lux slammed the door, crying at the sight of her beloved pet snarling through the glass.

He took her into his arms, rocking her back and forth. “It’s okay. He’ll calm down shortly.”

“I should’ve realized he’d react that way. He’s never seen me, or anyone fight, even playfully since I rescued him. God, I’m so stupid.” Lux sobbed against his chest.

“Hey, it’s going to be fine. He needs to get acquainted with shit like that. You can’t shelter him from the world, chérie.” He pulled back from her slightly, brushing her hair back from her face.

She sniffed, then gave a little cry. “You’re bleeding.”

“It’s just a little scratch. He got all his shots?” he asked.

“Those are not little scratches,” she cried.

He laughed at her when she tried to drag him back toward the kitchen. “Look at him.” He pointed toward the dog, staring at them through the glass door with big puppy eyes.

Lux turned to see what he was pointing at. “It looks like he’s... laughing at us with his tongue lolling out like that.”

“Not us, you. Come on, let’s rinse my booboo before Chains gets here.”

“Who’s that?” She glared up at him with her hands on her hips.

He gave her a little kiss on her nose, slapping her on her bare ass when she slipped by him on her way into her bedroom. He waited for her to return to explain that Chains was the man who would be driving the cage as she played nurse. Hell, he had no clue having her stand between his legs while he sat on one of her stools would make him hard. It was a good damn thing she’d put some leggings on while getting the supplies to fix him up. Yet, there she was with her bottom lip between her teeth, concentrating as if she were a surgeon making sure she cleaned the three little scratches. She was the one who winced, not him, when she applied alcohol then ointment over them before a large bandage was smoothed over the red marks. If it had been up to him, he’d have run some warm water over it, opened up a bottle of whiskey, taken a drink, then splashed a little over the marks, then drank some more. Bam, done.

“Alright, you should be fine, but I’ll watch for signs of redness when I take the bandage off tonight. Loki’s good with shots, and he’s never out of my yard, so he’s not exposed to—why are you grinning like that?”

“Chérie, you’re too good for the likes of me. Problem is, I’ve got no intention of letting you go. When I was a boy, my mamere said it would take me a lifetime to prove to the woman I love what she meant to me, but three seconds to say the words.
